Where is Mount Everest located?
Why would someone want to climb Mount Everest? What gear and equipment is needed to climb Mount Everest? Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It is part of the Himalayas, a mountain chain in Asia. The word "Himalaya" comes from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. Hima means "snow" and alaya means "house," so Himalaya means "house of snow." Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest, who surveyed India in the 1800s. It is very difficult to live as high up as the Himalayas, but the Sherpa people have been doing it for hundreds of years. A Sherpa is a member of a group of people who live in the most mountainous region of Nepal, very high in the Himalayas. The Sherpa people are well-adjusted to living in the high mountains and many work as mountaineers and guides for those coming to climb Mount Everest.
